Yesterday afternoon was nice so we walked to the park. Before we left, Ezra asked if his friends would be there (any child age 1 1/2-10ish) and I said we would have to see. When we arrived, the park was deserted but soon a little boy and his parents came. Ezra started yelling "Transformers!" and capering about to attract his attention, but the boy was happy playing with his parents. A mom and a girl showed up and started visiting with the other adults and the children began to play. Ezra rushed over but the boy and girl (who he knows from preschool) didn't seem interested in playing with him. In fact, one was not very friendly at all to him. It was about time for us to go home anyway, and on the way home I tried talking to him about kids who are friendly and kids who, well, aren't. I could tell his feelings were hurt; and he didn't understand why they wouldn't want to play, too.
How do you explain this to a three year old?
